Originally developed for the Oklahoma Health Sciences Center as part of an Emergency Medical Services for Children (EMSC) grant, EDscan rapidly became an invaluable data collection and analysis tool for other Emergency Department (ED) - related research projects.

The system is designed to capture important information on pediatric patients that enter the Emergency Department. These patients require information more specific and more appropriate for their age group than what the many ED documents capture for older, adult patients. Additionally, by utilizing specially designed documents to capture this information, clinical assessments and pediatric-specific assessments were more easily performed. The documents serve to not only capture the information but also prompt clinicians to look for other signs or symptoms of abuse and neglect.

Given that these documents are also scannable, the information is available to be added to the system database virtually at the time of patient departure from the ED. Then, with data already captured and available electronically, the document can be filed or enter the ED or hospital paper trail.

The EDscan system also offers a number of "screens" for keeping out illogical or missing data. Was the patient’s DOB recorded as 1920? Unlikely, given the patient’s pediatric status, perhaps an administrator inadvertently documented it as 1902 instead of 2002. What would possibly be a missing patient from the database when searching on a specific age range, is instead error checked and allowed to be corrected. Similar screens exist for all other data elements as well, and are completely user definable.

Any series of queries can be run against the data and of course saved for future use or modification. Want to know how many peds under the age of 5 years arrived from MVCs and were not in safety seats? Further, do you want to compare and contrast treatments for those patients and look at differences in their prehospital care? Simple, with EDscan.

Standard and custom reports are available with each system and are so easily run that many systems have been operated by admins with little or no knowledge of computers or very limited time. The reports can be generated on any range of dates or emergency department areas or any other set of indices desired. All reports are well designed and easily updated hourly, daily, weekly, quarterly - you name it.

Additional features include but are not limited to:

  • Import features allowing data exchange and additional data capture from separate and distinct systems
  • Scripts to automatically run a series of pre-set queries and/or reports
  • Export capability for further information analyses

EDscan is a proven and well-designed system for pediatric information capture, analyses, reporting and export. If you would like to learn more, please do not hesitate to contact us at 520-519-0239 or via email at information@emsdata.com
